about

No Type founder David Turgeon comes back under his Camp moniker. Commun·e is the first album of new Camp material since 2008’s Doubts EP, following the recently reissued and remastered provocative glitch house mini-album Féministe (2001).

Commun·e is a collection of solid, tense, intricate rhythm tracks that look towards footwork, UK bass, dub & braindance, favouring a diverse array of BPMs. The resulting album is its own mutant, wry thing, great for both for listening & dancing.

This album is inspired by Hochelaga, the infamous working-class Montréal borough where Turgeon and his family settled in 2021. “Perspective Morgan” is named after the comically grandiose pre-war-era avenue facing Marché Maisonneuve, while the festive “6600” is a reference to the Mobilisation 6600 Parc Nature coalition, which fights to make public parks out of the area’s many abandoned industrial junkyards. As for “Trente-Catherine,” that’s a gentle nickname for the bus line the artist takes nearly everyday to his day job.

The product of an intensive recording stretch in February 2023, Commun·e is informed by various hot strains of electronic music from Detroit, Chicago and London, though Camp eschews soulful samples and deep bass lines, instead zeroing in on the latticery of the percussion itself, weaving complex rhythmic patterns across a canevas of negative space. Fans of Beatrice Dillon, Foodman, Loraine James and late-period Snd will totally get it.

Like previous Camp titles, the album’s name is a tongue-in-cheek wordplay, mixing the French adjective for “common” and the historically-loaded substantive “commune”.
